029 – Economic Development Secrets – Gail Bulfin, Greater Fort Lauderdale

This month’s special guest is Gail Bulfin, Vice President of Membership Development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. Her primary focus is to grow membership, develop new opportunities for networking, direct the Port Everglades Action Team, organize and lead the Alliance Leadership trips, plan the major events and oversee the member development department.

Under her guidance, membership has grown over 80%, and member engagement is at an all-time high. Bulfin is responsible for writing, editing and producing event programs and special publications. She sits on leadership committees for the Metropolitan Planning Committee (MPO) and is often asked to be involved in strategic planning sessions for both public and private institutions.

The Alliance is the County’s economic development partner and as such, markets and promotes Broward as a business relocation destination.

Prior to joining the Alliance, Bulfin was an editor at the Sun Sentinel where she
managed the news research department, oversaw training for 350 newsroom staff and was the reader editor in the newsroom. She was director of the National Writers’ Workshop for eight years, an annual weekend conference for writers held in Fort Lauderdale drawing over 500 attendees from around the United States. She was a frequent guest lecturer at the Poynter Institute of Media Studies, the Maynard Institute, Freedom Forum and various other media-related organizations within the United States and abroad.

Currently she is the chair of the board of Business for the Arts Broward.
